5 Very English Vineyards

Updated: Jun 23, 2021

While England's climate hasn't yet allowed for it to become an iconic wine region, we've been delighted to see more and more wines from the English countryside cropping up at London restaurants and stylish British weddings. If you are a wine lover and haven't got the time or funds to go further afield, tickle your tastebuds with these local recommendations for days out in the vines.

1. Chapel Down:

Chapel Down is located in the beautiful Kent countryside, close to the picturesque market town of Tenterden, and is open to visitors throughout the year. Set amongst 22 acres of vineyards, the winery has a high-quality restaurant and a shop stocking a variety of local produce. They offer a number of different packages including a 6 English cheese and matching wine tasting for £50pp and a 3 course lunch and wine tasting package for £100pp. They also partner with local hotels for all inclusive overnight stays.

2. Nyetimber:

Situated in the rural heart of the South of England, the team at Nyetimber craft award-winning world-renowned wines. Specialising in sparkling wines they have won English Wine Producer of the Year a record eight times at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. You can book a private brand ambassador tastings (£POA) or pay a visit to the vineyard on an open day for £35pp, which includes a 2 hour tasting and tour. Alternatively book the open day with a four course paired dinner menu for £150pp.

3. Bluebell Vineyard

A family-run vineyard and winery located in the heart of the Sussex countryside with a passion for producing world-class sparkling wines. All their wines are estate bottled, vintage and medal winning. They run tours and tastings on different days throughout the year as well as organising picnics and walks down their woodland trails. It is also close to the Bluebell Steam Railway if you fancy making a double trip!

4. Denbies Wine Estate

Set in the Surrey countryside Denbies offer both private and group tours of their indoor and outdoor winemaking - normally running on the hour throughout the day. They also offer a mixture of packages throughout the year including an afternoon tea hamper for £29.95pp or a sparkling wine tour on their own little covered train for £12pp. The vineyard boasts some of the best panoramic views of the countryside so it’s well worth bringing a camera.

5. Camel Valley

Set in a beautiful corner of Cornwall the winery has been producing since 1989. With views of the Camel River their terrace is well worth a visit to enjoy some of their wines by the glass.  They have two holiday cottages situated on the land if you fancy making more of a weekend of it. Their tour and tasting package comes in at only £18pp or else you can enjoy the tour and just a single glass of wine for £9.50pp.

Happy Drinking!
